Girl Ultra Teams Up With Chromeo and Empress Of on new single “TOMÁS” Out Now on Big Dada

May 13, 2024 – Today, acclaimed Mexican indie artist Girl Ultra (aka Mariana de Miguel) shares a new single “Tomás”, featuring legendary electro-funk duo Chromeo and rising Honduran-American vocalist/songwriter Empress Of. The single is also accompanied with an official music video–directed by Girl Ultra with cinematography by Ricardo Martinez Roa–featuring Mariana and Empress Of. "'Tomás' is about the archetype of a man," explains Girl Ultra. "'Tomás' is someone we mourn, yet despise—someone we invoke through the repetition of his name. We want to move on, but we’re still attached."

Speaking on the new single and the new collaboration, Girl Ultra adds, “Working with Chromeo felt like fulfilling a teenage dream. Growing up on the edges of the indie sleaze era in Mexico City, I was deeply immersed in it. At 15, I used to save up to see Chromeo live, but I always dreamed of experiencing the bloghouse sound from a different perspective—beyond just being part of the audience.

"Tomás" was recorded in Chromeo's studio in Los Angeles with all analog instruments. "I embraced their sleek sound while adding my own approach with distortion and post-production," Mariana says. "Then Lorely (Empress Of) joined us, bringing her powerful pop voice to co-write the track in Spanish."

“Tomás” follows Girl Ultra’s tour with Chromeo and The Midnight last fall which included performances at Terminal 5 (NY), Echoplex (LA) Anthem (DC), Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom (IL), and more. Other notable performances include a live session for Elevator Music (a unique series that features artists performing inside an actual elevator), a guest appearance for The Marias at Pal Norte Festival, and more. Girl Ultra will return to the UK and EU later this month. See full dates below.

Her latest EP ‘blush’ received acclaim from the likes of Remezcla, SPIN, Wonderland and GRAMMY.com who spotlighted the EP as a “Must-Hear”. More recently, she was featured on American Football’s official ‘American Football (Covers)’ album covering “But the Regrets Are Killing Me”.
