Barry Can't Swim Releases Double Singles “About to Begin” and “Cars Pass By Like Childhood Sweethearts”
May 21, 2025 – Fresh off the heels of an almost entirely sold-out North American tour, Barry Can’t Swim - one of the most exciting electronic artists in the world right now - is treating fans to two new singles from his upcoming album, Loner, out July 11th on Ninja Tune.
“About to Begin” is the pulsing first offering, fueled by fast-paced beats. The track’s highlight is the repeated intense builds to the drops, making it perfect for a live setting and rightfully earning its place as a fan favorite on the most recent tour. It’s released in tandem with “Cars Pass By Like Childhood Sweethearts,” a mellow juxtaposition to “About to Begin.” Soft beats with layered, fading vocals create a mesmerizing soundscape is yet another example of Barry Can’t Swim’s impressive production prowess.

The songs follow the release of collaborative track “Kimpton” with O’Flynn, as well as “Different” - a heady slice of electronic euphoria which has become a staple fan-favourite in the Edinburgh born producer’s enigmatic performances and “The Person You’d Like To Be” featuring a distorted and ambiguous conversation between the producer and his friend.
Just a few weeks ago, Barry Can’t Swim concluded an impressive run of North American shows, including three sold-out shows in New York and concluding with two nights at The Shrine in Los Angeles. In July, he’ll bring his captivating live set to Lollapalooza main stage performance and rounding out the summer with sets at Montreal’s Osheago Music & Arts Festival and Los Angeles’s HARD Summer. Barry Can’t Swim recently graced the COVER of Pollstar Magazine which described him as “a rising tide” in the global music scene.
Barry’s acclaimed debut When Will We Land?, released October 2023 and currently on over 100M+ album streams, received endless praise including being shortlisted for the 2024 Mercury Music Prize alongside the likes of Charli XCX, Beth Gibbons, English Teacher, Ghetts and The Last Dinner Party. Barry now proudly sits among Aphex Twin, Nia Archives, Burial, Jamie xx, and Jon Hopkins as a rare solo electronic artist to be shortlisted for the highly prestigious award. To add to this, he was also nominated at the BRIT Awards 2024 in the Dance Act category, shortlisted in the Scottish Album of the Year awards, received a top three position in the lauded BBC Sound of 2025 list, and the album was also named one of the best electronic albums of the year by Billboard.
